Proper nutrition and physical activity are key factors in shaping a child’s healthy lifestyle. However, the issue of food restrictions for children is a matter of controversy. Should a child be restricted in food if they are overweight? How does this affect growth and development? Coach and nutritionist Viktor Mandziak explains how children should eat.
According to Viktor, the main cause of childhood obesity is overeating. Genetics, unhealthy eating habits, low physical activity, stress, and lack of sleep are added to this. Parents are responsible for what their children eat and how they spend their time.
“A child is the plasticine from which we shape the future. Eating habits formed in childhood can last a lifetime. Therefore, it is important to teach children a healthy lifestyle from an early age,” the expert emphasizes.
Many parents are afraid that food restrictions may affect their child’s growth. However, studies show that reducing the calorie content of the diet, even with a calorie deficit of up to 15%, does not impede children’s growth.
“In fact, the body needs a very small amount of additional energy for growth – about 1% of the total caloric intake,” the expert notes.
The child’s diet should include foods with a high satiety index – protein products, vegetables, and fruits. It is important to reduce the amount of sweets, carbonated drinks, and processed foods.
Instead of gadgets, go to sports clubs, take walks in the fresh air, and play in the yard. Invest in a regular scooter or bicycle instead of an electric scooter.
Instead of filling the refrigerator with junk food, provide access to healthy snacks such as vegetables, fruits, and yogurt.
For weight loss, set a small calorie deficit, but provide your child with enough protein to prevent exhaustion.
Obesity in childhood significantly increases the risk of obesity in adulthood. This can lead to health problems such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic disorders.
Parents play a key role in shaping their children’s healthy habits. The right approach to nutrition and an active lifestyle will help a child to be healthy, happy, and successful.
